Johnny T’s Freeform Radio was established by John Toye, a native of the North Shore of Boston and a retired U.S. Naval Officer veteran; retiring from active duty in 1998 with 22 years of services. After his retirement from the Navy, John settled in Virginia Beach, VA where he now calls home.
John is a lifelong music enthusiast with a wide interest in all genres of music. During his active duty service, John spent two years as a Classic Rock DJ for WJFK Radio while stationed onboard the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 from 1979-1981. WJFK was an official radio station of the American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) Group of military radio stations. Strategically located at Military Bases and on large Naval Vessels throughout the world, AFRTS stations provide for our active duty service members radio services so that they may enjoy music and news while stationed away from home.
John’s time spent as a DJ for WJFK satisfied his intense music interest and also afforded him the opportunity to gain experience in the delivery of on-air music and news broadcasting, and radio station business content management.

In addition to being a music enthusiast, John is a compulsive ‘Audiophile’ who is captivated by pure audio sound quality and Hifi audio equipment to take his music passion further. However, unlike modern day audiophiles pursuing their hobby with new Hifi technology, John’s audiophile fascination is focused on finding and collecting Vintage Hifi audio equipment. John just recently completed his grueling three year journey of locating and building what he believes is a perfect vintage Hifi equipment setup.
John's trophy hifi system includes a mint 1979 Sansui G-8700DB Pure Power DC Receiver, with a matching 1979 Sansui SE-7 Graphic Equalizer, and a 1979 Sansui SR-737 Direct-Drive Automatic Turntable. These beautiful vintage matched pieces are connected to and drive a pair of Klipsch 1990 Klipschorn Speakers also in mint condition. It is a true experience to admire and enjoy listening to a vintage Hifi system of this quality and caliber.
To add more fuel to the audiophile fire, John started collecting vinyl records and is currently on a mission to collect all of his favorite LP’s to play on his Sansui SR-737 Turntable. His current LP inventory is at 963 LP's and rising with a majority of his collection gathered going through piles and boxes of LP’s at numerous thrift and antique stores.
The journey continues and most likely will never be complete as there is a sense hitting the jackpot on those days you stumble across an original pressing of a favorite LP in perfect condition for only a $1.00.
